Now in beta — Miss My Dish is live on Android and we're still filling in the map. See what that means

Hong Kong food in the UK

Eat like you never left.

Find the dish that tastes like home — char siu, wonton noodles, cha chaan teng milk tea — rated for authenticity by people who grew up eating it, not strangers passing through.

Inside the app

Built for one question: does it taste right?

Three things Google Maps can't tell you — who rated it, why it matters to them, and whether the person behind the score actually grew up eating this.

Search by the dish, not the restaurant

Craving something specific? Search the dish and see every place near you that does it — restaurants and Chinese supermarkets both.

Scores that come from the right people

Authenticity is rated only by people from where the dish is from. A tourist's five stars doesn't move the number — no diluted scores, no guessing.

The story behind the plate

Every dish has someone who misses it. Read why a place matters before you go — in English or Traditional Chinese, whichever you think in.

How it works

Three steps to the right bowl.

Miss My Dish is free, has no ads, and works across the UK — we're growing town by town, starting where Hong Kong communities have settled.

STEP 01

Tell us where you're from

Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, elsewhere. It takes one tap and it's what makes the authenticity ratings mean something.

STEP 02

Search a dish or a mood

Homesick, comfort, spicy, celebrating — or just type “char siu”. Results come back with distance, opening hours and an authenticity score.

STEP 03

Rate it, or add what's missing

Somewhere good not on the map? Add it. Your rating counts fully for the cuisines you grew up with — that's how the map fills in.

Why it exists

Smell and taste are the only senses that route directly to the hippocampus and amygdala — the brain's memory and emotion centres.

One bite of congee in London can collapse thirty years in an instant — but Google still just gets you a restaurant, not home. Star ratings don't tell you if the char siu is actually done right, or if the owner is from Sha Tin. Miss My Dish is built by and for Hong Kong people living in the UK, so every place and dish is tagged, reviewed, and rated on authenticity by people who grew up eating it.

Beta testing

We're in beta — and we'd rather tell you.

The app works, it's free, and the ratings are real. But it's early, and being honest about that is how we get it right.

  • Coverage is patchy. London and a handful of UK cities are seeded. If your town is empty, it's not broken — it's waiting for someone to add the first place.
  • Scores need a quorum. A place needs at least three eligible ratings before a number appears, so early on you'll see stories where a score will be.
  • Android first. The Play Store build is live for testers. On iPhone, open it in Safari and add it to your home screen — same app, no store needed.
  • Things will change. Screens will move and copy will shift while we learn what people actually use. Your account and ratings carry over.

Questions

Before you download.

What is an authenticity rating?
It's a separate score from “is this tasty”. Only people who grew up with a cuisine can rate how authentic it is — a cha chaan teng is scored by people from Hong Kong and Macau, for example. Everyone else can still review, save and add places; their input just doesn't move the authenticity number. That keeps the signal clean.
Is Miss My Dish free?
Yes — free, with no ads and nothing to subscribe to. We don't sell data, and analytics are anonymous unless you opt in.
Is there an iPhone app?
Not in the App Store yet. Miss My Dish is a web app first, so on iPhone you can open app.missmydish.com in Safari and tap Share → Add to Home Screen. It behaves like an installed app. The Android build is on Google Play now, and iOS is on the roadmap.
Which UK cities are covered?
We're seeding town by town, starting where Hong Kong communities have settled — London first, then other UK cities. If your area is thin, adding a place takes about a minute and it shows up for everyone else immediately.
Can I use it in Chinese?
Yes. The whole app works in English or Traditional Chinese, including colloquial written Cantonese — the way people actually write, not textbook Chinese.
What does “beta” actually mean here?
The app is functional and safe to use every day, but coverage is incomplete and the interface is still changing. Your account, saved places and ratings carry over to the full release. Report anything odd to info@missmydish.com.
